The coat is short, stiff to the touch, and close.
Grooming: Not much grooming is required, however a good combing with a coarse comb is required when shedding.
General
American Bulldogs are powerful, athletic short-coated dogs which are strongly muscled and well boned. They boast the impression of great strength and endurance with their sturdy, compact build. The American Bulldog is in the class of working dogs and is of the mastiff family. They are gentle, loving companions which are suitable for families. They are fearless enough to face an angry bull or a human intruder. American Bulldogs are known for their love of children and are excellent with other pets, especially when raised together. Training should begin as early in the American Bulldog's life as possible. It retains what it learns for a very long time.
Excercise: This dog is very energetic and needs lots of exercise. Long walks, jogging, playing catch, or agility or skills trials keep it happy.

Temperament
This breed is affectionate toward children, if taught how to properly behave around them. It can be somewhat standoffish or aggressive around strangers. Because they were originally bred to bring down bulls and other livestock, the instinct to be aggressive with other animals is strong. Proper socialization is key.
